OCOEE RIVER – PIGEON RIVER

Top Tennessee white water rafting trips can be found on the Pigeon River and on the Middle and Upper Ocoee Rivers.

The Ocoee River is located one hour north of Atlanta, Georgia and is one of the most popular rivers east of the Mississippi. The Ocoee River is a dam controlled river with scheduled releases from March to November. Divided into two runs, the UpperOcoeeRiver’s “Olympic Run” (Class IV+) offers white water rafting thrills for more advanced rafters while the Middle Section (Class III-IV) is ideal for beginner to intermediate rafters.

The Pigeon River is located just outside of Smokey Mountain National Park and forms the border between Tennessee and North Carolina. The Pigeon River is mostly Class III (beginner) with a couple of Class IV rapids and is an increasingly popular whitewater rafting destination for beginner to intermediate rafting enthusiasts.

Ocoee Middle

The Ocoee Middle is a perfect half day trip for experts, novices, family groups and recreation clubs, offering big, exciting class III and IV rapids!

Trip Length: Approximately 3 1/2 hours (2 hours on the river)    Minimum Age: 12
Season: Weekends March, April, May, September, October. Thursday - Monday during Summer.    Intensity Level: Exciting but not strenuous. No previous whitewater experience needed.

Ocoee Upper

The Upper Ocoee is a perfect half-day trip for experts, novices, family groups, and recreation clubs. Dry prior to the Olympics, the Upper Ocoee has once again come alive. This section features the Olympic Whitewater course plus five miles of exciting whitewater. Releases on the Upper are limited to certain weekends.

Trip Length: Approximately 3 hours (1 1/2 hours on the river)    Minimum Age: 12
Season: Saturday and Sunday Only in Summer    Intensity Level: Exciting but not strenuous. No previous whitewater experience needed.

Ocoee Combo

The Ocoee Upper/Middle Combo comes action-packed with 10 miles of class III-IV whitewater- rafting both the Upper and Middle Sections!

Trip Length: Approximately 6 hours (4 hours on the river)    Minimum Age: 12
Season: Saturday and Sunday Only in Summer    Intensity Level: Exciting but not strenuous. No previous whitewater experience needed.

Ocoee River Basin Canopy Tour

Wooded and tree based canopy tour with 9 zip line sections and three swinging sky bridges that highlight the vast history and beauty of this once barren landscape. Canopy Rangers will share both the history and the wonder of the recovery of this area from red clay back to deep green forest.

Upper Pigeon

Lower Pigeon

ideal half-day trip for novices, families, and youth groups.Lower Pigeon promises 5 miles of Class I and II rapids providing a fun whitewater experience for the whole family.

Trip Length: Approximately 2 1/2 hours (1 1/2 on the river)    Minimum Age: 4
Season: May - September Tuesday - Thursday, Saturday releases only    Intensity Level: Very Mild.No experience needed.

Pigeon River Zipline Tour

This 12 zipline canopy tour takes visitors deep into the Smoky Mountain Creek Gorge exposing a lush forest of ferns, wildflowers, towering trees, rock cliffs,cascading waterfalls, and moss covered bolder gardens.

Pigeon Jeep Tour

A scenic ride on the backroads of the Smokies where the moonshiners once traveled. This area tour surrounds you with views into and above the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Martha Sundquist State Forest, and Cherokee National Forest. Your guide will choose from several tour routes depending upon weather and group interests. The tour is a mix of paved and unpaved roads with creek crossings, scenic vistas, and lush forests.

Trip Length: 1.5 to 2 hours    Minimum Age: 40 lbs.- kids 40-80 lbs. are required to sit in the front passenger seat with the airbag disengaged using a child booster seat. Children 80 lbs. or older sit in the back using a lap seat belt. If there is more than one child in the 40-80 lb. range, the second child will sit in the back using a lap belt.
